That organic living is a conscious health choice
Modern day cleaning seems quite ironic. We buy regular household cleaning agents that promise us effortlessly spotless floors, squeaky-clean toilets, and a home free germs and mould. But these products often contain harsh synthetic chemicals that irritate our skin, eyes and respiratory tract and may be doing you and your family more harm than good.
So, how can you thoroughly clean your home more naturally? For any cleaning product to work, chemicals are a must. There are the harsh synthetic chemicals - ammonia, chlorine and petroleum distillates - to a name a few. Then there are the good chemicals such as essential oils and sustainably sourced vinegars.
Essential oils have antibacterial properties and can effectively kill germs, without irritating your skin and they smell great. Use oils that are pure and not adulterated with alcohol or other oils. SuperNature has a range of organic essential oils that are pure enough to double up as moisturisers and massage oils for your skin.
How to use essential oils to clean your home
Cleaning the floor: Eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil make great floor cleaners. To clean wooden floors or tiles, just add 20 drops per five litres of warm water and mop away. Or for that extra bit of aromatic scent and calming effect add some spearmint or lemongrass oil with the tea tree oil.
Cleaning the bathroom and kitchen: Hotbeds of bacteria and mould, bathrooms and toilets can be disinfected and cleaned in a very cost effective way.
Simply mix half a cup of sodium bicarbonate with an equal amount of white vinegar, then add a few drops of tea tree oil. If you have a mould build-up, don’t reach for bleach as it whitens the mould instead of getting rid of it. Just add a few drops of clove oil to the sodium bicarbonate and white vinegar mixture and you’re on your way to a sweet-smelling, mould-free bathroom.
For a multi-purpose, antibacterial cleaning spray, mix nine parts white vinegar with one part essential oil in a clean spray bottle. This mixture can be used to clean your bathrooms, toilets, kitchen sinks and counters.
Cleaning carpets: To rid your carpets of strong odours, combine two cups of baking soda with 30 drops of lavender essential oil in a jar with a perforated lid. Liberally sprinkle this mixture on your carpets and leave it on for at least one to two hours before vacuuming thoroughly. The result? Clean, fresh smelling carpets that your kids can safely play on.
Get rid of ants: You can rid your home of ants naturally with just 10 drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball. Leave the essential oil-soaked cotton balls where you’ve seen the ants. Repeat every few days until the ants are completely gone.
